This book is one of a kind. It's written for beginners who have some understanding of basics but struggle connecting all the dots for a coherent applicable skill (I am of that kind). The humor aspect adds an additional dimension that pushes this book over the top. Like many, I am halfway through and impressed enough to write the review.
There is a lot of good information in this book. I just didn't like the way in which it was presented. It was too haphazar d and "messy" for me. I'm going through Murach's PHP and MySQL right now and it's more in line with how I learn: organized, linear, neat, tidy. Head First is good, don't get me wrong. But, I learn better with books that present the material in a more orderly, structured, traditional way. If you're more eclectic, then give Head First a try!

I disliked the examples in this book. One example, the Mismatch bar graph exercise was needlessly complicated. There should have been a simpler bar graph example before moving onto something more advanced. I like other Head First books, but this one is too outdated (2008) to recommend. The Model View Controller means of programming should be taught from the beginning, not as an afterthought. Additionally, better, basic security methods should be taught.

It is a very friendly introduction to programming concepts using PHP, however, the content seems to be outdated as some examples outright don't work. Be prepared to search the Internet for solutions when your code that is copied flawlessly from the book (or its companion repository) doesn't work as expected and returns errors.

That's what I would want from this book! It's definitely "over the top" in the fun department, even for a head first title, you can really see how the authors put some real talent and imagination to create the "case studies" for the code examples.. I just wish they had exercised the same level of tale nt and effort on the technical quality of the examples, which is unfortunately severely lacking, even for a beginner level text. There is way too little code, and the little that is present is way too simple and primitive. The end result is that this book reads like a very funny comic book with a little technical detail inside instead of what is really meant to be, a technical book with humour and creativity to make it more engaging. I think this has to do with the fact that both authors are more "creative types" than programmers at heart, so they naturally ended up concentrating on the side they care more about... overturning the rationale behind the head firts series. So.. a little less conversation, a little more action guys, or at least put as much action as conversation.. In some cases this was far too early and overly silly given you could really have NO clue whatsoever, but it's fun to look back and see how your guesses worked out. I think Head First is on to something. If you actually do the pencil and thinking exercises without just going for the answer you really do pick things up nicely. I'll compare this against other books, but I did not love the way it had you do certain things early in chapters you would never do in real coding. Why teach you to write code you won't write, only to say you should do it the way they end. I'd have started with how it should look and explain why you shouldn't just do repetition or you should have clean files with calls to other PHP files, so think that way. I found it confusing at times to have to shift gears from thinking about how to do something then realize I just learned it the wrong way and I'd have to do it another way. In all this was a helpful book. There are some errors in the book's code as well as the downloadable code online. Mostly with sticky forms. This was annoying as I thought it was an exercise to figure out how I screwed up when I first encountered it. Still, the book was entertaining and kept me interested and coding in my first experience with the language. It really brought concepts together and I can see a number of things I'll use in the real world. But for the code errors I'd have given it a four.

Whimsical, informative, humorous. As a Windows / PC based application developer for 30 years I have found this to be a good introductory and enjoyable approach to the non-Windows world of development. Most of my work has been with the unsung hard working end user, ordinary folks like most of us who do their work and go home to do other things. People who need to learn but don't want to be talked down to. In a similar way, this book introduces basic conc epts in an un-snobbish, non-condescending way to someone less than sophisticated in this area of interest. It's like having fun without the guilt of doing nothing useful. And it's a good start on this subject, maybe even for serious students.

I put down that book and pick up the next and re-learn what a variable is and learn about associative arrays, then they jump into checking if GET variables are set, but i don't even know what they are yet?? Head First PHP & MySQL pulls you into the pool fully dressed and forces you to get typing in a way that no other book even comes close to. It's easy to sit back and write a bad review that there's mistakes, parts that are difficult to learn etc - but if you review this book relative to what is out there - the others just can't compete. Head First successfully attempts to deliver an extremely educational book while being fun and modernistic. It is made up of several long, hands-on php/ mysql tutorials that do a great job of showing you how to apply top to bottom php coding. For me, the most impressive thing about this book is it's attention to detail - on more than one occasion I've wondered why something was done in a certain way and I turn the page to find that the detail has been answered! This is what I think helps the book to distinguish itself as the best 'how-to PHP' guide on the market. I strongly recommend this if you would like to learn PHP, however I would also strongly suggest that you buy yourself a beginner's PHP book to accompany it, that isn't tutorial based, such as PHP for Absolute Beginners (Expert's Voice in Open Source) . I'm mid-way through Head First PHP and stopped doing the tutorials just so i could write this review. In fact i found a free version of this book somewhere online and liked it so much that i went ahead and bought it on amazon because i felt the value I received was well worth the money.. plus it's like having a little PHP bible next to me:) Strongly recommended:)

I like Head First books. Whenever I pick a new language to learn the Head First books are best to get you started. This book is great. This book is a teacher like all other Head First books I have read. It not only teaches you the basic but some very comprehensive apps as well.

I was wo rried about the content being outdated, but there were really no problems like that. The only thing I did was look up how to use PDO instead of mysqli, but that isn't a flaw of the book, just a personal preference. The subjects are covered really well and in context, especially the part on cookies and sessions. Overall an awesome book.
