This textbook is a textbook example of why college textbooks are a scam. 1) Overpriced: This thing is required reading for a lot of college SQL classes but it is severely overpriced and you can find much better (and more up to date) info on the internet. 2) Poorly Written: It is poorly written with a lot of ambiguous and unclear statements; I don't know if the author is not fluent in English or if they have never had a conversation with an actual person but they have should never be allowed to write a book in the English language again. 3) Terrible structure: Chapter 6 is on subqueries, one of the most difficult parts of basic SQL to understand; Chapter 11 is a primer on the basics of databases and tables. Chapter 11 should be Chapter 2; Chapter 6 should be one of the last chapters. This was clearly written by people who have a thorough understanding of SQL but have never had to teach it or have bothered to learn any new skills as an adult. 4) Not up to date: This book assumes that you are using the current version of MySQL Workbench. The problem is that the software is updated fairly often and the author assumes that you are using the "current" version. A lot of the instructions are useless if you do not have the specific version that they are using. To make things worse; they don't tell you which specific version you are using so you have to buy a new book everytime workbench is updated. Whoever wrote this is an @$$hole; who every published this is a con artist; whoever assigns this is getting kickbacks. Murach and the racket that allows this to happen is a perfect example of what is wrong with education in the United States; they are horrible people and have no right to publish this garbage let alone profit from it.

Couldn't create database. Downloaded msq2_allfiles from the murach website, in "db_setup" folder, there are 2 "create_database" files, one for "MySQL 5.7 and later". Neither works. Tried both in MySQL workbench. 1. Since I just downloaded MySQL Community Server 8.0.11, I think I should go with "create_database-MySQL 5.7 and later", opened and executed, tried "SELECT * FROM terms;", got error message"Error code: 1146. I bought this book for my wife and the books is good for understanding basics of MySQL and even they provide you the database table scripts which can be ran in your local MySQL server so that the examples discussed in the book can be run in the local server. Definitely beginners need some professional help in understanding the concepts and running the examples in local server.

It has someone else's handwriting in it. I didn't find this until after time for it to be returned for a refund. The material in the book is great. I would r ecommend buying this book, just maybe not from Amazon. This is the second or third book I've recently gotten from them that that hasn't been new, but it has been sold as new.

Easy to read, even for someone with no prior SQL experience. The terms and procedures seem to follow a logical order. I like training that doesn't jump around from subject to subject. If the topic goes astray it is explained in detail. Do yourself a favor and follow the appendix instructions to install all necessary (free) software. The book is accurate and I had no problem duplicating these very complex queries as illustrated in the book. I've re ad many technical training books and this is among the easiest to follow. The results are impressive.
